    Hi

    in most cases adding a product to cart will pop up the side bar–>great!
    in 1 flow of coming back from checkout page to the cart it directs us to the cart page

    Is it possible to always open the side bar? we would never want to go to the cart page

    I am afraid no. This is how woocommerce work. In the checkout page the link is direct. This is not theme related.
