I am new to this theme, though I have hosted a few other wordpress theme websites. This is theme is definitely more complicated, and I want to start by just changing the main picture on the home page, but can’t figure out how.

Hello alainalarsen,

This is just a background assigned to the first ROW element on the page. In the admin area when you edit the page, click on the edit button for the Row (a pencil icon), than switch to the Design tab and you’ll see the background image settings. Here is a good video guide for Row element controls in the WP Bakery Page Builder:
